Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770. The house he was born in, at Bonngasse 20, has a history far preceding his birth and lasting far past the time his family left.

The cellars of the building date back to the 12th- and 13th- century. The building itself is one of the few 18th century Baroque homes still in existence in Bonn. Because the family outgrew the space, they moved to several other houses in the Bonn area. This birth home is the only existing home in Bonn that he once lived in.

What else has happened in Beethoven’s birth house?

Since their move the home has been an inn, housed craft workers, expanded with a Biergarten, and owned by a colonial merchant. In 1889, the Beethoven-Haus Society was founded. Through their efforts, the home exists today as a memorial.

There are various guided tours available throughout the property. For those looking for something more independent, pick up an audio tour. Families can go on a special children’s tour the first Sunday of the month aimed for kids over 6 years old. Workshops are also available for children during school holidays.

Please check the website for opening hours, admission, and information about workshops.
