In 2006 the city of Wuppertal invited seven artists to paint seven stairwells around town. The most popular of them was by the local artist Horst Gläsker.

His work, Scala, consists of 112 steps each painted a different color and including a different term. No color or word is repeated.

For people walking up the steps, they are treated to words to read. For those walking down, they’ll only see the colors.

This work was so popular locally upkeep continues today.
