Meet an NRWer: Michelle from Michelle Gallagher Artworks

As we get closer to the holidays, I thought I would highlight some of the NRW’s businesses. They’re a good source when thinking of gifts for the family.

Michelle studied sculpture at Limerick School of Art & Design in Ireland. After graduating, she lived in Botswana, Prague, Budapest, Seoul, and Konigstein Im Taunus before moving to the area in 2011.

She’s actively involved in the local art community – and she’s also looking for help from readers (more information below.) Let’s see what inspires Michelle’s creativity.

How did you get started sculpting?

My mother would say …” Michelle has always loved playing with mud”. From a very young age I had a big interest in art. I studied sculpture in college and later art teaching, and I have always made art. While at college I became interested in working with clay and over the years I have continued to practice and learn new ceramic techniques.

What made you want to start selling your work?

Well it’s a fantastic feeling to have someone fall in love with something you have created from your imagination…and they love it for whatever reasons.”Beauty in the eye of the beholder.” I still remember the buzz I got from the first sale I ever made, I was delighted that someone else liked something I had created.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration can come from a walk through Dusseldorf   …recently my family and I went to Schloss Moyland and I saw the work of some fantastic German Artists like Käthe Kollwitz, Joseph Beuys. I am a visual person, my inspiration comes from nature, I love Gruga park, and the beech forests in NRW, gallery visits K20, and K21 talking to others can spark an idea in my head.
I am currently mulling over the word “glauben” believe , which is the theme for an exhibition / Ausstellung 2015 I am involved in with some other ceramic artists in Hessen ( Ines Nickchen’ ceramic group, I studied ceramics with her for 2 years when I lived in Koingstein Im Taunus ). We would love to bring the exhibition to NRW and are looking for a venue here. So if any readers know of somewhere we could use for an exhibition in NRW that would be fantastic we could bring the show here from Hessen.

What other places do you enjoy visiting within the NRW?

As a family some of our favorites have been Tiger Turtle, Gruga park, Villa Hugel. We all love being able to just get our bikes ( my older children learned to cycle here, Konigstein was very hilly for a beginner!) and go for a cycle through the forests or along the Rhein…ice cream always helps at the end. Or ‘kaffee und kuchen ‘at Schloss Helfort in Rahm.

What should people know if they want to order something from you?

I have a gallery of work in my studio, any interested clients can contact me via email and we can arrange a time for viewing work or discussing commissions. In the gallery space are a selection of Christmas decorations, vases, spoon rests etc…contact me and come and have a look. Customized pieces -Name plates, Mini Memories. These individual artworks can take between 6-8 weeks to complete…they need to dry very slowly to avoid warping.

Michelle’s work is so inspired! I’m always in awe of sculptors, I can’t understand how they do what they do – it seems to me one of the most difficult forms of art which makes it that much more special!
