The Externsteine, External Stones, natural rock formation has had significant cultural importance in Germany’s history. It’s written history dates back to the 16th century. The steps, nooks, and observation deck date back to the 19th century. In the 20th century, it was an example to glorify ancient Germanic tribes and medieval Germany. Today a nearby Information Center displays the history of the stones.
In addition to the stones and the Information Center, there is also a restaurant, playground, a nature preserve, and several trails in the area.
The Externsteine complex has various hours of operation throughout the year. Check the website for the most up-to-date information.
